Las Planideras, Rancho Santa Fe

Challenge : Due to rising water costs and the onset of drought conditions in their area, the client had let the sod lawn in front of their home die. They wanted an attractive drought tolerant / sustainable option.

Solution: Low berms were added in front of the home. These were planted with a mix of soft mounding plants and hardy succulents. Together they added texture and color to the site, while helping to ground the home into the landscape. In front of the berm a centerline of blue chalk stick ice plant was installed to add an element of nature. The centerline was then offset by a wavering pattern of inset multi colored beach stones, surrounded by a drift of neutral colored gravel. Together these elements created a visually interesting space using practically no water.
